Music Artist
Jorge Zamorano Jorge
grew up in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, and
moved to Oregon with his wife and two sons in 1992.
He has lived there for the last 10 years.
Jorge played guitar at an early age with an interest
in rock that eventually led to classical guitar. When
he was 15, he heard a Peruvian kid playing Girl from
Ipanema, and after that he was hooked on Brasilian music.
At 17, he heard the soundtrack from Dona Flor and Her
Two Husbands, and his favorite song was O' Que Sera,
by Chico Buarque, sung by Simone. It is still his favorite
tune today. Jorge was so inspired by Brasilian artists
that he named his oldest son after Airto Moreira, a
great Brasilian percussionist.
For over 20 years, Jorge has studied Brasilian music
composed and performed by Villa Lobos, Egberto Gismonti,
Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, Airto, Flora Purim, Djavan,
Ivan Lins, Sergio Mendes and Caetano Veloso.
Jorge has performed with many artists of diverse backgrounds
from around the world, including Clark Terry, Charlie
Byrd and the Great Guitars, Randy Brecker, Rich Matheson,
The Platters, The Drifters, the Coasters, and many others.
He has also performed at Inaugural Balls for Presidents
Carter, Regan and Bush.
Jorge is also an active ASCAP member and part of the
All-American Composers Library in New York City. He
has written music for jingles and network television
for the last 12 years. This music has been used for
commercials such as Theraflu, Huggies, and Coors Light,
plus television shows Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,
The Maury Povich Show, Jerry Springer, Life Goes On,
and The Jackson's Television Movie.
Jorge is regarded by his peers as the Pacific Northwest's
premier Latin/Brasilian Jazz guitarist, and has recorded
on many CDs locally and nationally.
Most recently, Jorge is a member of the Indian Jazz
fusion group, Facing East. Their lastest release, Facing
Beloved, is out and the group tours around the US in
a wide variety of venues. They appeared on Echoes Living
Room Concerts in July 2003 that played on 150 radio
stations across the US.
